What is a dental veneer?
Dental veneers (also referred to as porcelain veneers) are very thin material that is shaped to fit an individual's tooth. These veneers can be made of resin composite materials or porcelain. Porcelain will reflect luminosity better than the resin composites. Veneers are bonded directly to the surface of the tooth and are permanent.
Why are veneers used?
Many people loose the confidence to smile when teeth become chipped or broken. Different medications can also stain the teeth. Sometimes teeth are misshapen or have large gaps between them. Veneers can fix these problems, giving people the confidence to smile again.
A veneer can be placed on a front tooth that has been worn down. Maybe the tooth is shorter than the one beside it. A veneer will be placed to make the worn tooth the same size as the other tooth. A gap between the front teeth (diastema) can also be fixed using veneers.
Veneers for Appearance
Not everyone uses veneers to fix teeth. Sometimes people want to improve their appearance. Teeth that are stained from tobacco or medications can be covered with veneers for a bright new smile. Others may want whiter teeth and a more brilliant smile for professional or personal reasons. The veneers make teeth a beautiful white color for that 'pearly white' smile most people desire.
Having veneers applied to your teeth is usually a 3-step process. In the first step you will consult with your dentist. He or she may x-ray your teeth or make impressions. In the second step your dentist will prepare your teeth for the application of the veneers. He will also send the impressions to a dental laboratory to be manufactured.
When the veneers come from the laboratory the patient's teeth will be cleaned, polished and etched to help the veneers adhere. A special cement will be used. This cement is activated by a light beam and hardens very quickly.
Veneers usually give people fantastic results. The teeth that were once misshaped or broken now look straight, healthy and white. Whether the veneers were placed for dental problems or for personal reasons, most of the time the resulting smile is beautiful.
